Making a contribution

The Greater Redstone Clearwater Initiative is looking for volunteers for a stream walk.

The volunteers will be trained in how to identify pollution sources and other problems along the 123-mile watershed of Little Redstone and Redstone creeks, and Downers Run, in Fayette County.

John Piwowar, a Fayette County farmer and president of the Clearwater Initiative, pointed out that while state Growing Greener grants may provide funding for technical assistance and later remediation work, watershed groups depend on volunteers for "ground work."

He said the stream walk can be a pleasant experience for those who enjoy the outdoors.  Volunteers also can make a real contribution to identifying environmental problems and solving them.

Watershed groups are burgeoning throughout the region.  We commend the groups' efforts and all the volunteers who keep them going.  They really walk the walk.
