Two streams to be cleaned up

Members of a Fayette County environmental group plan to meet Sunday to clean up two streams running through Uniontown.

Brian Chalfant, development coordinator for the Greater Redstone Clearwater Initiative, said the group will meet at 9 a.m. at Marshall Park near the Uniontown Public Library.  Volunteers are welcome to join.

The group tries to do the cleanup twice a year, Chalfant said.

Those participating will be picking up trash in the stream channels and along the banks of Redstone Creek and Coal Lick Run.

The Redstone Creek watershed contains 300 miles of streams in a network that flows from the mountainous section of South Union Township to the Monongahela River at Brownsville.  Redstone Creek, which runs through the center of Uniontown, is its most prominent waterway.

In addition to Sunday's cleanup, the group is working on a variety of projects to rid the watershed of abandoned mine discharges and illegal dump sites.  A $66,203 state Growing Greener grant funded a needs study that was completed last month.
