1998

December 1998 - A Smock native, Bruce Kilgore, contacted the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection to find out about any efforts to clean up Redstone Creek after returning home dissapointed to find the creek still running orange.  He set up a meeting to discuss starting a watershed group to begin addressing pollution in Redstone Creek.

1999

January 21, 1999 - Bruce Kilgore met with representatives from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection and the Western Pennsylvania Coalition for Abandoned Mine Reclamation to plan how to get local citizens interested in forming a group to cleanup Redstone Creek.

August 26, 1999 - Volunteers collected water quality samples from 40 points along the tributaries and main stem of Redstone Creek, Little Redstone Creek, and Downers Run. Volunteers measured flow, pH, and specific conductance in the field at certain points. PADEP's Mining and Reclamation laboratory provided analyses of pH, total alkalinity, MBAS, total ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, 5-day BOD, suspended solids, net acidity, total acidity, total sodium, total iron, total magnesium, total aluminum, total phosphorous, organic phosphorous, total sulfates, and fecal coliform.

November 3, 1999 - A training day for volunteer stream monitors was held at the Slovak club in Gillespie with representatives from Skelly and Loy, Inc.

November 9, 1999 - Volunteers collected water quality samples from 2 points along the main stem of Redstone Creek. Volunteers measured flow, pH, and specific conductance in the field at both points. PADEP's Mining and Reclamation laboratory provided analyses of pH, total alkalinity, suspended solids, net acidity, total acidity, total iron, total magnesium, total aluminum, and total sulfates.

2000

February 16, 2000 - Greater Redstone Clearwater Initiative became officially incorporated by the Pennsylvania Department of State under the Nonprofit Corporation Law of 1988.

April 20, 2000 - Volunteers collected water quality samples from 4 points along the main stem of Redstone Creek. Volunteers measured pH and specific conductance in the field at all 4 points and measured flow at 3 out of the 4 sites. PADEP's Mining and Reclamation laboratory provided analyses of total alkalinity, suspended solids, net acidity, total acidity, total iron, total magnesium, total aluminum, and total sulfates.

April 27, 2000 - Volunteers collected water quality samples from 42 points along the tributaries and main stem of Redstone Creek, Little Redstone Creek, and Downers Run. PADEP's Mining and Reclamation laboratory provided analyses of total alkalinity, MBAS, total ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, 5-day BOD, suspended solids, net acidity, total acidity, total sodium, total iron, total magnesium, total aluminum, total phosphorous, organic phosphorous, total sulfates, and fecal coliform.

June 2000 - Heather Fowler was hired as the Watershed Coordinator for the Fayette County Conservation District.

September 11, 2000 - The Internal Revenue Service granted Greater Redstone Clearwater Initiative probationary tax-exempt status under section 501(a) of the Internal Revenue Code as a nonprofit organization described in section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. The probationary period, or advance ruling period, ends on December 31, 2004.

October 28, 2000 - Greater Redstone Clearwater Initiative conducted a stream cleanup with the help of PA CleanWays, Inc. and Laurel Highlands High School.

2001

January 19, 2001 - Greater Redstone Clearwater Initiative was selected to receive a $66,203.00 Growing Greener grant to conduct a water quality and riparian health watershed assessment.

March 31, 2001 - Greater Redstone Clearwater Initiative received a $5,728.00 Growing Greener grant to conduct an education/outreach program. This grant was used to purchase an Epson PowerLite 71c Multimedia Projector ($2,695.00), a Dell Latitude laptop computer ($2,321.00), and a tabletop display from Downing Displays ($622.00). Greater Redstone Clearwater Initiative received the executed final agreement from PADEP for a $66,203.00 Growing Greener grant to conduct a Water Quality and Riparian Health Watershed Assessment project.

October 22 - December 2, 2001 - Members of Greater Redstone Clearwater Initiative, the Fayette County Conservation District, other volunteers, and Skelly and Loy, Inc. conducted a stream walking inventory of approximately 39 stream miles in the watershed.

2002

January 17, 2002-GRCI sent out a request for proposals for the Phillips mine discharge remediation project.

August 7, 2002-GRCI received a $139,034.00 grant from the GG program for the design and permitting of the Phillips mine discharges remediation project.

November 9, 2002 - Greater Redstone Clearwater Initiative conducted a cleanup of an illegal dump site along Vance's Mill Road in North Union Township with the help of Laurel Highlands School District and the North Union Township Supervisors.

2003

March 3, 2003 - Greater Redstone Clearwater Initiative received approval from PADEP for an extension of the deadline for the watershed assessment grant until June 30, 2004.

Summer 2003 - Kyle Zielinsky and OSM Intern began 3 months of service with Greater Redstone Clearwater Initiative, producting a movie, Restoring Redstone, about the Greater Redstone Clearwater Initiative and contributing to the newsletter..

2004

April 30, 2004 - Greater Redstone Clearwater Initiative signed a Memorandum of Understanding with BAJA Development Associates and L.P. and JK Enterprises, Incorporated authorizing the advance of $10,000 to Greater Redstone Clearwater Initiative to perform stream mitigation projects in and about the Redstone Creek in North Union Township, South Union Township, Dunbar Township, and/or Menallen Township.

May 21, 2004 - Members (John Piwowar and Jim Tobal) of the Greater Redstone Clearwater Initiative, along with other watershed organizations and government agencies and individuals, participated in a Fayette County Watershed Workshop focusing on membership development strategies.

June 22, 2004 - The first OSM/VISTA with Greater Redstone Clearwater Initiative, Brian Chalfant, began his year of service.

July 29, 2004 - Greater Redstone Clearwater Initiative participated in the George C. Marshall Plan II ribbon cutting ceremony by setting up a display board in Storey Square and handing out brochures
